New to the gym.....

I was very nervous about approaching a personal trainer mainly because a gym is not my natural habitat. My goal is not only to lose weight but also to be healthier, turning 50 can be a real reality reset! Angus is just so lovely. He gave me a much needed reality check regarding my health but the stronger message was that it is totally within my capabilities to change. He has got me doing a range of workouts in the Gym that quite honestly I thought were beyond me – physically and psychologically. He has encouraged me to make some subtle changes to my diet that have made a huge impact in just a few weeks. Overall, I feel stronger, my sleep is better, my skin is clearer and although I hate to admit it after a session in the gym I do actually feel better. Angus is the perfect balance of giving you the facts but providing the encouragement and positivity needed to make change. If you’re not sure how to move forward Angus is the man to guide you.

Tara's Journey: Building health and resilience after cancer

Angus and I are sitting on the soft crash mats at the foot of Oakley Sport Centre’s token climbing wall. He is focused on some gadget and scribbling down figures on a pad. He looks up, removes his glasses and announces with glee “47”. “47 is your new biological age”. I smile. A milestone indeed.

Back in 2019 I was probably hovering around the 74 year old mark. My body had been subjected to the sadistic roller coaster of cancer treatment, leaving me scarred and diminished both physically and emotionally. My days of running around parklands with yummy mums were long gone and I had resigned myself to no longer being able to eat what I liked, when I liked. I also needed a new wardrobe.

A few years later, a chance encounter with Dr Angus Turner set me on the slow path to recovery. We had discussions, not so much around fitness but rather on how to remain healthy for as long as possible. As a fully trained medic, Angus understood what my body had been subjected to and how best to turn things around. Diet and sleep were integral to the programme.

We started off gently and over the next few months fine-tuned a routine, that combined exercises at home, in the gym and out in the open air. For a week I kept a photo diary of my eating habits which were then scrutinised and improved. Angus also reviewed my daily routine in order to optimise on exercise opportunities throughout the day.

I now rarely take escalators or lifts. Instead, I climb stairs two at a time. When in London, I’ll factor in time to walk between meetings, rather than take the Tube or a taxi. Carrying shopping bags counts as a workout not a chore. I’ve upped my proteins and excommunicated refined sugars.

Having reached a basic level of fitness, we’re now stepping up a gear which is where Angus’ Army Reserve training kicks in. Test and adjust, adapt and overcome, Mission Impossible has become Mission Possible.

John: Working with a Chronic Back condition to embrace health and fitness

I first met Angus – not in the context of employing him as my personal trainer but through my work as a photographer. On our first meeting he came across as a warm, friendly, honest and an incredibly likeable person. And then as I listened to him talking about what he does and his approach to health, fitness and nutrition I realised that I needed Angus in my life.

I have had major back issues for some twenty years – and previous instructors have never really taken this into account – usually ending up with me hurting my back and putting me out of action. Angus with his training and medical background is the first person who has listened to what I have said, taken it on board and not only found a way to help me train but to help strengthen the problem and to minimise risk in the future as I get older.

I was not looking for a trainer – but at the back of my mind I realised I needed help to make me fitter, healthier – now and almost more importantly in the future. Angus turned out to be the ideal match at the right time. He is supportive, reactive, encouraging, lovely to spend time with and very good at what he does. His expertise has greatly benefited me physically, mentally, and nutritionally. I wholeheartedly recommend him for anyone looking for a trainer who genuinely cares and excels at what he does.
