 GLP-1 receptor agonists — drugs like semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) — are rapidly changing the landscape of obesity and type 2 diabetes treatment. They’ve shown impressive results in reducing weight, improving blood sugar control, and even offering cardiovascular benefits in high-risk patients.
 

But there’s a critical piece of the story that’s emerging: these drugs don’t just reduce fat. They also reduce lean mass, including muscle. And that has implications for long-term health, strength, metabolic rate, and physical resilience. 

What Are GLP-1 Agonists (Like Semaglutide)?

 GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) receptor agonists mimic a hormone that helps regulate appetite, insulin release, and gastric emptying. They reduce hunger and increase satiety, making it easier for people to eat less — and lose weight as a result.
 

These drugs were initially developed for type 2 diabetes but have gained approval and attention for their effectiveness in treating obesity, even in people without diabetes.

GLP-1 Drugs Are Not a Permanent Fix

GLP-1 agonists are a breakthrough for people with obesity-related complications, type 2 diabetes, and heart failure. But their growing use in the general population — especially for cosmetic weight loss — raises important questions.
 

These drugs were never designed to be a permanent fix or a shortcut for lifestyle change. Yet that’s exactly how they are being framed — by industry and by media.
 

That’s why it’s more important than ever to ensure people are supported — not just with prescriptions, but with a foundation of resistance training, adequate nutrition, and sustainable lifestyle change.
